We have been following rumors that have been going around for several days about the departure of Dave Escamilla from Crown The Empire. His most recent Instagram post seems to confirm everyone’s speculation.
It all started with this Facebook post made by the band, (which was deleted immediately after being posted) followed shortly thereafter by a cryptic tweet made from Dave’s official twitter account.
Fans who were alarmed by these two posts started noticing that Escamilla was no longer following Crown The Empire on any social media account. Weird, right?
Then, today he went on a lengthy rant in the comment section of his most recent Instagram post, which seems to confirm the rumors that he was either kicked out or left the band of his own accord. He had the following to say:
“I’m not proud of Retrograde at all. The whole thing was a mess. My work doesn’t always define who I am. Especially when it’s manipulated by outside sources. THATS the reason I’m not proud of it. It’s because it wasn’t true to me and was mostly written by people not in the band. If you respect me as an artist, I’d hope you’d be curious as to what I really want out of music and am capable to create.”
For those who don’t know, Dave is referring to Brendan Barone, the man behind all of their wacky wardrobes and the ghostwriter for basically the entire Crown The Empire body of work. Sorry to burst your bubble kids, but no, they don’t write most of their own music and haven’t from the start. Escamilla went on to further explain, “A lot of character changing over the years. A few of us are into metal and the rest of the band listened to all kinds of music. In my opinion, it was simply experimenting at a more commercial level. Which may or may not always work in an artists favor. But that’s not for me to judge! I just know how it made me feel. To be honest, my head was a mess. I take a lot of the blame for the position I put myself in. Too many drugs and partying can really cloudy everything up. But that led to many other problems and lack of fulfillment creatively.”
Seems like either the band has let him go for his drug use, they no longer see a need for a screamer, or a combination of both. Either way, it appears Dave didn’t take too keenly to Crown The Empire going in more of a rock direction, but the reality is that metalcore has been on its way out for several years now with declining show attendance and declining sales. Whether Dave quit or got fired, we may never know, but we can’t really blame Crown the Empire for wanting to stay relevant, and we can’t really blame Dave for not wanting to continue playing music written by someone not even in Crown the Empire. We’re sad to see him go, but we wish Dave the best in his new musical endeavors. Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds!
